Sarah + Derrek | Rustic Ontario Barn Wedding
Sarah and Derrek got married on one of the warmest days in September. The sun was shining, and we were surrounded by green fields + wildflowers at their Century Barn wedding. All of their family and friends were on hand, from decorating the arch under which they said their vows, to singing them the song for their first dance. It was the perfect show of support and happiness to being a lifetime of wedded bliss.
How They Met
[We met at a] friends' cottage in Dunnvile. Our best friends were getting married to each other and were having a cottage weekend. Sarah walked in while Derrek was climbing a tree. Then we didn't see each other for 6 months until Derrek's friend's birthday, where we talked all evening, then we started dating a week later.
At Sarah's cottage. Derrek dressed up secretly while Sarah was starting a fire and when she turned around he was standing in the doorway. She said "what are you doing?" , "why are you wearing that?" , and "are you serious?" before she said "YES! YES! OF COURSE YES!"
The colours were pinks and golds. We wanted an outdoor, rustic, and elegant atmosphere.
[We had] 90 [guests].
It was exactly what we were looking for. We fell in love with it instantly. We'd checked out a couple before but none spoke to us.
The ceremony was short and sweet. It took place on in a grove behind the barn, on the grass and in the shade. We wanted it to be respectful to both of our families. We also wrote our own vows.
The reception was in an 18th century barn, with natural light and it had it's own beauty, we didn't' have to decorate it much. We didn't want the traditional Hall experience. We chose round tables so people could mingle easier and be surrounded by more people than if it had been straight tables. We used the soundtracks from Guardians of the Galaxy 1&2 during the meal- we love the feeling of all the oldies songs. What really made our wedding/reception special for us was that all of our family and friends were able to participate and contribute in some way, such as speeches, first dance song, wedding games, MCs, making the cake, and setting up and tearing down. As much as it was OUR wedding day, we really wanted everyone to have a good time and enjoy themselves.
Sarah's Bridesman Patrick Beh did all the work. We told him the colours and feel we wanted and he took it and ran with it. We wanted pinks and golds like our wedding colours, but also flowers that were in season. He hooked us up with a bulk supplier and then the day before the wedding the entire wedding party gathered in a hotel room and made ALL the arrangements under the direction of Patrick. It was epic.
Our last names are Drake and Birch, so we wanted the cake to look like a birch tree and we had a male duck a.k.a. a Drake sitting on the cake. Derrek's aunt Sylvia Muir made the cake as her wedding gift to us.
We had a late night popcorn bar with 3 different flavours and take away bags. The best part was stickers on the bags that said Thanks for Popping By.
